Measuring up!

Professor Andre Luiten was honoured today by the National Measurement Institute as he received the 2017 Barry Inglis Medal.

Presented by Dr Barry Inglis PSM himself, the medal recognises outstanding achievement in measurement research and excellence in practical measurements.

Dr Inglis is the president of the international body that defines the units and measurement scales for science (CIPM) and was the first CEO of the National Measurement Institute.

IPAS New Year Event for 2016

It has been the tradition of IPAS to celebrate the successes of its members in the new year rather than during the busy and crowded end of the year.

This year we held our event on January 29 in ‘the Jungle’ at the Kent Town Hotel to recognise the achievements of our members as well as to plan for the year ahead.

The winners of the annual “IPAS Student Research Event” were awarded. These prizes are designed to encourage our PhD students to make compelling and effective presentations. The two best presentations were given to Michelle Turvey from the School of Biological Sciences for the talk “Identification of beer spoilage microorganisms using the MALDI Biotyper platform”. Michelle was awarded the “IPAS Tanya Monro Presentation Award” which was the People’s Choice award. Milad Dakka took away the “Merry Wickes Transdisciplinary Prize” for the talk “Optically enhanced environmental dating”. These two should be firmly congratulated for their efforts among tough competition.

We also recognised the efforts of three other students in this exercise, Carly Whitakker for the talk “Optical fibres for radiation detection and dosimetry” from the School of Physical Sciences, Jonathan Hall for the talk “Biolaser” from the School of Physical Sciences and Thomas Chambers  for the talk “A digital holographic imager for the study of cloud particles” from The School of Chemical Engineering. The students were recognised for their outstanding efforts by awarding them with an “Honourable Mention”.

An important benefit flows from the involvement of our students in organising, participating and presenting at the event. The skill of effective communication is one that helps in every aspect of life and this event provide opportunity for training through practice and examples.

We also announced winners of our “Best Papers” competition for 2016. We were inundated with entries showing the quality and impact of the research being conducted by IPAS members. Take a look at the winning papers here.
