Congratulations to Prof Andre Luiten who was awarded the prestigious 2018 Australian Institute of Physics Alan Walsh Medal for Service to Industry. This medal not only recognised Prof Luiten for his outstanding research in photonics and optics but also for his exceptional leadership in commercialising breakthrough research to support industry needs. The medal and prize was presented at the 23rd AIP Congress held in Perth in December 2018. More excitingly, this award will also be featured in the next issue of Australian Physics magazine.
Prof Luiten’s excellent research was also recognised with other distinguished awards including the 2018 Defence Science and Technology Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australian and the 2017 Barry Inglis Medal from the National Measurement Institute.

The Alan Walsh Medal is an initiative of the NSW Branch of the AIP, recognises significant contributions by a practicing physicist to industry in Australia. It commemorates the late Sir Alan Walsh, Kt, FAA, FTS, FRS, one of Australia’s most eminent and distinguished scientists, who was the originator and developer of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) and pioneered its application as a tool in chemical analysis.
