A tiny glass sphere including heavy tellurium metal was reported to achieve excellent sphericity and a size 10 times less than diameter of a human hair. These glass spheres have potential to be used to detect particles with their size equivalent to a virus, and also generate a laser with its light not visible to human eyes. This new kind of the lasers can be used in defense industry as well as detection of many toxic gases, which cannot be achieved by using spheres made from conventional silica glasses used in our daily life.
