Paper Summary by Dr Sabrina Heng “A dual sensor for Cd(11) and Ca(II): Selective Nanolitre-scale sensing of metal ions”

Sabrina Heng

We have designed and developed the first sensor that is selective only for cadmium and calcium when tested against other biologically relevant ions.  Cadmium is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions and it exerts its toxicity by disrupting the way calcium is being used in the body.  By developing this sensor, we now have a new tool that can be used to better our understanding on how the two ions are related.
