IPAS members attend a plethora of events
There has been much activity in IPAS recently with the array of events our members have attended. Here is a snippet:
Joint conference, Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society (ACMM), with the Australian Nanotechnology Networkon Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN) 2-6 February 2014
Prof Tanya Monro and Mr Angus Netting from the Adelaide Microscopy group are co-chairs of the ICONN and ACMM conference currently being held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from February 2-6. IPAS and CNBP have booths with many of our members in attendance.

CNBP Kick-off Workshop – 30-31 Jan 14
On 30-31 January we held the inaugural CNBP Workshop in The Braggs Lecture Theatre with over 70 participants. The purpose of the workshop was to strengthen interactions with national and international colleagues who are partners in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP) and to ensure we are well positioned to take advantage of all the opportunities the Centre will offer.
IPAS New Year Event 2014 – 23 Jan 14
On Thursday 23 January we held the annual IPAS New Year Event at Serafino Winery, McLaren Vale. Members are invited each year to celebrate the start a new year together whilst relaxing over food and wine. We had a tour of the wine making facilities and sampled a few varieties before a 3 course lunch. Comment was made by many that the day was extremely relaxing and enjoyable.

Annual IPAS Student Research Event – 21 Jan 14
Students are invited yearly to present their work in 5 minute talks for the chance to win two $1000 prizes. The prizes on offer are the Merry Wickes Transdisciplinary Award and the IPAS Disciplinary Award.
This year we held the event on Monday 20 January and heard talks from Mr Daniel Stubing, Ms Tess Reynolds, Mr Tim Engler, Mr Myles Clark, Mr Chao Zhang, Mr Lachlan Harris, Mr Malcolm Purdy, Mr Simon Curtis, Ms Michelle Zhang, Ms Liz Klantsataya and Mr Ashby Hilton.
Well done to all students who presented. The talks were all of the highest standard.
ANZCOP Conference 8-11 December 2013
On 8-11 December 2013, Dr James Anstie, Dr Phil Light, Dr Richard White, Dr Chris Perrella, Dr Lihn Nguyen, Mr Herbert Foo, Prof Tanya Monro, Dr Stephen-Warren-Smith, Dr Kristopher Rowland, Dr Erik Schartner, Dr Georgios Tsiminis, A/Prof David Lancaster and Prof Andre Luiten attended the Australia and New Zealand Conference on Optics and Photonics (ANZCOP) in Perth, Western Australia and presented their work.
Chris noted that there was an interesting plenary talk by Dr Bruce Tromberg from Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, University of California, Irvine, USA on the topic “Engineering Optics From Benchtop to Bedside” which discussed using lasers and optical systems in clinical trials to diagnose and treat a range of medical conditions.
