Enhancing the radiation efficiency of dye doped whispering gallery mode microresonators
This paper described a coupling effect between a dye doped polystyrene microsphere used as optical resonator for Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) sensing and a suspended core Microstructured Optical Fibre (MOF), resulting in an enhancement of the WGM radiation. We showed that this enhancement is strongly depending on the diameter mismatch between the optical resonator and the MOF’s hole where the microsphere is sitting. As a result, the WGM radiation enhancement induces a higher Q factor of the resonance which in turns improves the sensor’s resolution as well as allowing the utilization of smaller resonators.
